Democrats in control of the U.S. House gave their final approval to a massive spending bill Friday that would force taxpayers to fund the killing of unborn babies in abortions.
The appropriations bill (HR 7617), which passed in a 217-197 vote, includes money for defense, education, health and human services and other agencies through 2021. But pro-abortion Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, went back on an agreement with Republican leaders not to include “poison pill language in spending packages through 2021.
Within the bill are multiple measures to undermine pro-life policies and executive actions that protect unborn babies and mothers and prevent tax dollars from being used for abortions.
President Donald Trump’s Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance policy is one of them. It ensures tax dollars are not being used to promote or provide abortions overseas. It defunded the International Planned Parenthood Federation of about $100 million and a British-based abortion chain of about $73 million.
The Democrats’ bill also would restore approximately $60 million annually to the Planned Parenthood abortion chain through the Title X program, and would amend the Dornan Amendment to allow Washington, D.C. leaders to force city taxpayers to fund elective abortions.
“This bill is in clear violation of the historic bipartisan agreement to preserve current federal pro-life policy, yet Democrats in Congress have recklessly chosen to pass it, said Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Repealing the Protect Life Rule would effectively unleash the flow of $60 million in taxpayer money to Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry, who consistently prioritize abortion and profits over the well-being of women and girls.

Other language in the bill would reverse an important religious freedom policy by the Trump administration that protects the Little Sisters of the Poor and other charities from being forced to fund contraception, including forms that may cause abortions. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the policy earlier this summer, but Democrats want to remove it through legislation.
House Democrats also want to stop Teen Pregnancy Prevention program grants from going to programs that promote sexual abstinence. The bill includes new language that likely would funnel more money to Planned Parenthood, which already receives millions of dollars annually through the program.
Last week, leading pro-life Congressman Chris Smith, of New Jersey, spoke out against the legislation on the House floor.
“Someday, future generations of Americans will look back on us and wonder how and why a society that prided itself on its commitment to human rights precluded virtually all protection to the weakest and most vulnerable: unborn children, Smith said.
The bill is unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate, and Trump has promised to veto “any legislation that weakens pro-life federal policies and laws, or that encourages the destruction of human life at any stage.
But Dannenfelser said the spending package shows what Democrats will do if they win the U.S. Senate and the White House in November.
“The abortion extremism that we currently see from House Democrats is only a taste of what a Joe Biden presidency would look like, she said. “He would work with abortion radicals to obliterate longstanding pro-life policies and promote abortion on demand through birth on American taxpayers’ dime. This election is a matter of life and death. It is imperative that we re-elect President Trump, secure a strong pro-life Senate majority, and defeat extremists across the board.
Last week, Smith expressed outrage that any lawmaker would support abortions. He describe how abortions involve “dismembering a child with razor-sharp knives, pulverizing an infant with powerful suction devices, or chemically poisoning a baby with any number of toxic ‘medications.’â€
He urged his fellow lawmakers to support programs that really help women and children in need by providing maternal and prenatal care, nutrition and basic health care.
“No one is expendable or a throwaway, Smith said. “Birth is merely an event, albeit an important one, in the life of a child. … vulnerable unborn children and their mothers absolutely deserve respect, protection and an abundance of compassion.
